Limited Teaching Only teaching what you can do or want to do while neglecting what your students can do or need to do. Why People Teach Most martial arts start as “what if” or “how” arts and over time, the questions are lost but the answers remain. The questions then become “why” and understanding why you are doing something is the key to moving forward. Measurements I’m going discuss the accuracy certain comparisons and measurements of time used to assess a person’s knowledge, experience, and skill. Also the common comparisons made in the industry. Testing Why you are doing it, why it’s important, and who you’re assessing. Forms, Katas, Sets, and Drills Different words used to describe the same thing but then the same thing used differently because of different words. It’s important to understand that most things are similar but different and then how to utilize that knowledge. (Or just watch the video to understand this description.) You Must Improve as Well* The moment you stop trying to get better is when you start getting worse. Responsibility* Knowledge is power and with power comes responsibility. (Yes, I read comics and no, I will not talk about spiders.) Your Curriculum* I talk about setting up your techniques based on what you teach and how you teach it and the various ways to go about that. Patience* Just wait for it. (That’s a joke.) Really this is probably the most important thing that you can have as an instructor and there is a secret to it. What’s great is that you don’t have to wait for it, just watch this video and I’ll tell you all about it.
